Die tropische Insel Sri Lanka im Indischen Ozean, nur ca. 55 km südlich vom indischen Subkontinent entfernt, hat sich erst vor ca. 8.000 Jahren vom indischen Festland gelöst. Sri Lanka ist mit 65.000 km² etwas kleiner als Bayern und hat über 20 Mio. EinwohnerInnen. Die größte Bevölkerungsgruppe sind Singhalesen mit ca. 75 % Anteil an der Bevölkerung, gefolgt von Tamilen (ca. 15 %), die sich im Norden der Insel im Lauf eines 25-jährigen Bürgerkrieges bis 2009 blutige Gefechte mit den Singhalesen geliefert haben. Die vorherrschende Religion ist der Buddhismus. Die Hauptstadt Colombo im Westen der Insel ist mit über 700.000 EinwohnerInnen nach wie vor die größte Stadt des Landes.
